As the bitter cold of January sweeps in, I find myself with a bit more time to be inside thinking back on my work from this past year and what it means to be a lifestyle family photographer. I am eternally grateful for my client base full of people who appreciate the beauty of the mundane and the strength in candid images. Thank you so much for making 2024 another amazing year as a photographer in tiny central Massachusetts. Join me as I share some thoughts and my best images of 2024.
What it Means to be a Lifestyle Family Photographer
To me, being a family photographer, a newborn photographer— it doesn’t mean snapping perfectly posed pictures of everyone with a practiced smile on their face— it means I am responsible for telling your story. For capturing your connection together, the in-between moments, the tiny details that make your family one of a kind. Anyone can snap a photo of you to show that you all exist in a space together, but what about photos that make you smile at the memories of the bits and pieces that would otherwise fade with time? That’s what I’m here for. That’s what I want to provide for you.
Authentic and Intimate Images
As my style continues to evolve, I’ve leaned hard into the documentary vibe. I want authenticity, I want messy, I want you being you. It’s about moments, not just smiles. If our paths cross this year, I promise to send you away with images that will make your heart race to remember the individual beauty of your family’s connection.
Favorite Newborn Photography Moments
Some of my favorite newborn photos this past year were from in-home lifestyle newborn sessions. These sessions allow for such candid movement and variety. A day-in-the-life perspective is so perfect for capturing those early days with your new baby. Some moments in particular that pulled at my heartstrings were new parents soothing their fussy baby. I think when we envision our newborn photography session, we are crossing our fingers and toes hoping that baby will be calm and happy. But honestly, a little fussiness is so okay and can even help you feel more comfortable in front of the camera as you are able to focus more on baby than the fact that you’re being photographed.
Where Did 2024 Take Me?
A huge highlight of 2024 was being able to do a couple family sessions on the West Coast. I love travel, I love California, and I love capturing memories for people. In addition to these cross-country sessions, I also of course got to work with many families from around New England. From antique homes in Vermont and New Hampshire, to the shorelines of Maine and Massachusetts, and the old neighborhoods of Boston, I’m always reminded of the magical variety New England allows for photography. I will be opening up 1-2 sessions in each Cape Cod area and Kennebunk/ Portland, ME area in the spring/ summer, so reach out quick if you want photos in either of those places. Looking Ahead to 2025
As I look to the year ahead, I want to continue to connect with families who share my values and my visions. I want to lean in to the documentary aspect of family photography and do more activity-based sessions. My website will be getting a re-vamp and I am crossing my fingers that will be great for helping even more families looking for candid connection-filled images to find me.
With a presidential inauguration coming up that has me questioning what America really stands for, I want to make sure to stay focused on lifting people up and finding love in all corners of life. This coming year, let’s focus on celebrating inclusivity. Celebrating LGBTQ+ love, celebrating all colors of skin, celebrating joy and connection in every form it comes. And most of all, let’s just try to be good humans.
